DESCRIPTION
The area of the Parnonas mountain range shows a great variability of habitats which offer shelter to many Greek endemic taxa, some of these being exclusively endemic to this area. Twelve taxa indicated as D in section 3.3 and belong in two categories. In the first category belong new taxa for the science and have been recently described and therefore have not been included in any red data list but they are vulnerable or endangered since they are respectively by small populations and are in many cases in danger of extinction. In the second belong plant taxa which are either Balkan endemics or have small and scattered populations in Greece, some adjacent Balkan countries and Anatolia. This site is characterized by a rich, diverse and interesting fauna from a geographical and ecological point of view. There are taxa protected by the Bern Convention (motivation C) and by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981 (motivation D). The invertebrate species listed in sections 3.3 with motivation D are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981.
