The site has already been characterized as an E.C. Important Bird Area and there is no doubt that as a wetland it presents a combination of several important habitats and species keeping in mind that the whole of S. Peloponnisos, and especially the coasts, are characterized as dry rocky areas. Those areas of the present site play an important role in the conservation of the sites biodiversity. Many Other Important Species (section 3.3) have been recorded from this site, a fact that illustrates the diversity of the sites faunistic diversity. The bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus and the jackal Canis aureus, are mentioned in the Greek Red Data Book under the threat categories “Insufficiently Known”, “Endangered” and “Vulnerable”, respectively (motivation A). Also, the lizards Algyroides moreoticus, Podarcis peloponnesiaca are Greek endemics. The first is distributed in Peloponnisos and the islands of Ithaki, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Strofades, while the other taxa are found only in Peloponnisos (motivation B). All taxa have been listed in the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981 and so justify motivation D (the exceptions are Vipera ammodytes, C. aureus). The toad Bufo viridis, the frog Hyla arborea and the water snake Natrix tessellata are mentioned by the CORINE-Biotopes Project’s handbook, a fact which constitutes an additional reason for allocating motivation D to these animals. Finally, additional reasons for allocating motivation D is given for Ophiomorus punctatissimus whith a very limited distribution area in Greece which is also the westernmost part of the species’ whole distribution range. This site is also of great importance as a station for migratory birds and therefore considered as an EC Important Bird Area. Waterfowl and birds of prey threatened in Greece have been recorded there. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation C are protected by the Bern Convention. The invertebrate species listed in sections 3.3 with motivation D are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981. The priority species Callimorpha quadripunctaria, is removed, as it was not recorded and habitats are not considered adequate.Evrotas beach together with nearby beaches of Vathy, Mavrovouni, Selinitsa and Valtaki constitute an important nesting area of the priority species Caretta caretta. Also the marine area in front of Evrotas beach is a well documented foraging and developmental area for juvenile Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, as well as a mating and inter-resting area for reproductive Caretta caretta.Area Vrondama – Evrotas: The area is distinguished by a large limestone canyon, where a part of Eurotas river flows initially aboveground (throughout the year on the upper level of the region), while in times of drought water is kept only underground. In the upper part of the gorge, in times of drought, the remaining waters create stagnant ponds, on the rocky riverbed where all the remaining fish populations are concentrated. Across the region significant populations of endemic and rare species exaretika Squalius keadicus are found (Skoulikidis et al 2008). It is also extremely important region for the following rare endemic fish species of Directive 92/43: Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus and Pelasgus laconicus while other vulnerable species such as Anguilla anguilla and Salaria fluviatilis are present. The area host significant population of otter Lutra lutra, which relies heavily on fish populations for food.Area Platana p. Eurotas. The area hosts the local endemic Squalius keadicus. Extremely important area also for the following endemic species: Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus and Pelasgus laconicus. This area retains until today important riparian forests and in some places the bed is enriched with spring water, creating important shelters for fish populations during periods of drought (Skoulikidis et al 2008).Vivari p. Eurotas. In the region there are stable and important populations of endemic species Squalius keadicus. Extremely important area for the following endemic species: Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus and Pelasgus laconicus. The area has very large riparian forests and in some places the bed enriched with spring water, creating very important refuge for fish populations during periods of droughts (Skoulikidis et al 2008).
